We review the APA guidelines and how to properly cite information. We also discussed how to better organize my paper and have my ideas flow together more smoothly. After the tutoring session, I realized I needed to find more resources from the medical point of view and to include more information on methods of research. She also informed me on how to write an abstract and how to start my paper with a hook that the reader can relate to.

general summary of what you discussed: Completing my abstract correctly and clarifying quotations
brief description of specific elements of your project you will change based on your tutoring session: I began working on my abstract but wanted to finish this after I knew exactly which journal articles i planned on using. I’m happy with the ones I chose and feel the abstract explained the paper appropriately.I also had a lot of run on sentences that needed to be fixed. my tutor gave me great tips in how to better format and transition between paragraphs~

I did my review through smart thinking online. I received feedback on the 8th of April. My tutor was Anne. C.
My tutor mentioned the following items that needs improvement for my paper:
    1) Be specific with your thesis statement.
    2) Explain or interpret the references you cited in your paper.
    3) Add a comma before the coordinating conjunction when writing items in a series.
Based on the feedback, I would make sure I explain more of the references after citation and add a comma. The strategy my tutor used is to ask the question such as “How is it relevant to your discussion? Try reading your paper again to see if you have other references that lack proper interpretation.” I would use smart thinking for my future writing assignments because it is a very quick and effective way to get feedback about my writings.

date & time of the appointment: 4:00pm-5:00pm In person at Main Campus Writing Center
    name of the tutor: Shantal
general summary of what you discussed: We discussed everything from the APA formatting to paragraph transitions and how to relate back the topic.
brief description of specific elements of your project you will change based on your tutoring session: I will not only add just what I found in the articles but also answering questions that arose while reviewing my paper. Since the writing center wasn’t familiar with dental hygiene, she said she wanted to be able to read it and understand what I was talking about as well. So I will have to define the medical/dental terminology.
brief description of the writing and revising strategies you and your tutor discussed: Get more in detail with the subject and elaborate on each section. Think of the cause/effects and ultimately the response of the patient.

Date: Smarthinking; submitted my paper on Sunday, March 5 and it was returned to me on March 6.
    Name of tutor: Ashleigh N.
I indicated that I would like help with developing the content of my paper as well as the introduction and conclusion. Based on my tutor’s feedback, I worked to connect the supporting ideas and paragraphs of my paper back to the main idea. She showed me an excerpt from my paper that could use some revising in order to relate it back to the issue of caries in children and helped me to understand how I could improve the content. My tutor also guided me to develop a stronger thesis in order to properly state the main idea and discussion points of my paper. Overall, the feedback I received from the online tutoring session was great, and I will definitely be using this feature again the in the future!

date & time of the appointment: Monday, April 6 4:00pm
name of the tutor: In person meeting – not sure of her name
general summary of what you discussed: Discussed formatting of APA style papers and in-text citations
brief description of specific elements of your project you will change based on your tutoring session: I will change my in-text citations, form a reference page, and change my section headings
brief description of the writing and revising strategies you and your tutor discussed: We discussed the format of my paper and which areas to develop more, how to properly format APA papers and the creation of a cover page and reference page.
include ideas about whether or not you would use this strategy in future writing scenarios: I have used the writing center several times before and I think it is very helpful as a quick review of my paper to check for simple errors that may be easily overlooked. Also, reading aloud my paper helps me to notice any poorly structured sentences and small grammar errors.

    Tutor: Alexis
My main concern discussed was the organization of my paper and the connection to my topic. I was able to see where my paragraphs would get off topic and how there needs to be a solid position from the dental and other perspective, as that is the focus of the paper. It was also helpful having another set of eyes look over all my awkward phrases and run on sentences. I realize now my paper is written in more of a casual way, which is something I would like to fix. My APA formatting is also something I need to work on, as my in-text citations were slightly off.

  12. Jess Price

date & time of the appointment: 4/6/15 5:00pm
    name of the tutor: Melanie
general summary of what you discussed: Melanie discussed how to fix my grammatical errors throughout my paper. She also told me that some sentences in my paper did not flow very well and that I needed to rephrase it or completely delete it from my paper. She said my paper was very informative, interesting and enjoyed reading it.
brief description of specific elements of your project you will change based on your tutoring session; and
brief description of the writing and revising strategies you and your tutor discussed; include ideas about whether or not you would use this strategy in future writing scenarios: Melanie pointed out many of my weaknesses i.e. grammar. She referred many different sites where I can get a better understanding on how to phrase something if I get confused. She also taught me that APA format uses past tense terms (I didn’t know this) and not present. After looking through the corrections Melanie made throughout my paper, I am more aware of these mistakes and will be looking for them when I write my final draft.

over all she said my paper flowed very well; however, I did have a few grammatical error. She taught me to explain more things instead of using terms that us as dental professionals may be familair with. I learned proper citing techniques as well. This was helpful and I will be visiting the writing center more with all my papers.

    ● date & time of the appointment: submitted Sunday night, returned Monday Afternoon
    ● name of the tutor; Allison
    ● general summary of what you discussed; common grammar errors: use of semi colons, proper transitions, in text citations. She suggested going through again and reading sentence by sentence to hear for any run ons or misworded phrases. Allison thought that my conclusion section was strong and left the reader with a good final thought and connection the main topic of the paper. I will be re reading my paper again this evening to make sure that all the points I have made relate to the main topic and are properly cited. I did like having someone at the writing center look over my paper and hand back notes. Ideally, next time I Would like to be able to go and have a face to face, but the online option was extremely helpful in this situation.

    ● date & time of the appointment: April 7th at 8:50 am
    ● name of the tutor: Mia P.
    ● general summary of what you discussed: Overall she liked my paper. I just had a few sentence structure errors that I need to fix. I also need to fix some of my in-text citations.
    ● brief description of specific elements of your project you will change based on your tutoring session: I had some grammatical errors that I need to fix such as using commas correctly with conjunctions, ensuring antecedent-pronoun agreement, and citing correctly.
    ● brief description of the writing and revising strategies you and your tutor discussed; include ideas about whether or not you would use this strategy in future writing scenarios: I need to make sure that I am not using a singular noun with a plural pronoun to make sure there is antecedent-pronoun agreement. I would use this strategy in the future to help me because I was not aware that I was doing it but now I know to look for it. I would also use the writing center for future papers because they found things that I did not see.

In this session we discussed proper APA formatting with my title page, in text citations, and references. Based on this tutoring session I will change the way I format my title page to make it for the APA guidelines. I will also double check on how to cite my references because the way the online sources say to cite it for APA are slightly different than the proper way. Some writing and revising strategies we discussed where to go back after writing each paragraph to read through it for any errors and make sure it flows. Most of my errors come from writing too fast and not thoroughly double checking my work. Reading through each paragraph right after will help me catch any errors and I will know what I was trying to say at that point instead of reading through it later and being confused as to what I was trying to say.

We went over the overall flow of the paper, if it made sense to the reader and it’s organization. In addition, we looked of the APA format.
It tutoring session was very helpful, especially with my errors on the APA formatting. Based on this session, I will do some minor changes on my organization. Furthermore, I edit my citation and reference page to be more satisfying for the APA format.
We main went over the APA format and the confusion I was having with it. She also showed some quick tricks for the layout/formatting on the computer. She even gave me handouts and more information on APA formatting.
With everything she showed me and the handouts she gave, I will be definitely using this for future APA format papers in the future.

Upon my visit to the writing center, I had learned several different things to help me improve my writing skills. The tutor advised me of a few tips to bring my paper to the next level. One of which was for me to use more transitional words in order to link my paper together; I learned that this will help my paper to be more uniformed. She also advised me to correct some of my run on sentences even though I had just a few but it was important for me to use proper grammar and keep each idea in one sentence and paragraph. Finally, I learned a few techniques on how to do my reference page and citations by using Perdue Owl, which was also advised by the tutor. Overall, I feel more confident about writing papers because I have taken all these tools with me in my tool basket for when I am doing further research and writing papers in the future.

I submitted my final paper to Smarthinking on Thursday April 2, 2015 and received it back on Saturday April 4, 2015.
The tutor who reviewed my paper was Adrian R.
I was only able to check off two areas for Adrian to review for me so I chose to do my over flow of the paper using correct APA format, and correct grammar. Overall, Adrian thought I did a great job with my APA format and proving great information based upon my topic.
Some areas of my paper that I will change are correcting sentences in which I misuse the need for commas, as well as replacing words in sentences such as “which” and “that.”
Adrian discussed the points listed above as areas to go back and look at throughout my paper. Reading sentences that have commas in them to be sure that the commas are needed will help with my writing. Making sure that I am only using commas to join a sentence to another that couldn’t stand-alone is an important factor. Also making sure I am hyphenating appropriate words is something to look at as well. Over all I really enjoyed the feedback I was given and will definitely use the strategies Adrian suggested for me. Over all it was a pretty good experience using Smarthinking. I will continue to use this program with all of my future papers.

My appointment was on April 2 at 3 PM with Rachel. She reviewed my paper for grammar and to ensure my paper flowed properly. I did not have my conclusion written prior to the appointment because I was still debating on adding information from another article I found, so she worked with what I had. The session really helped because she helped me think of ways to make long sentences less wordy. After going through my whole paper, she told me that I should make my argument clearer, so I did so by adding an appropriate thesis statement. She also told me that my personal speculation seemed more of a summary with an opinion followed by it, so I went ahead and took out the summary and started with my opinion on how dental hygienists and nurses should work together to provide oral care to the elderly in nursing homes. Since I agreed my paper flowed better after that, I finally wrote my conclusion, and my tutor was pleased with the progress we made during our session. I definitely need to stay focused on what my subheadings say. If it is a personal speculation, I’ll try not to stray from that by adding a summary of the previous paragraph.

  22. Samantha Black

Date & time of the appointment: I submitted my paper online to smart thinking on Sunday, March 29, at 4:30pm
    Name of the tutor: Katrina
General summary of what you discussed: We discussed the transitioning throughout my paper and grammatical errors.
Brief description of specific elements of your project you will change based on your tutoring session: I will be reevaluating my paper to add in some more information, as the tutor recommended, to help the reader better understand the purpose of the paper.
Brief description of the writing and revising strategies you and your tutor discussed; include ideas about whether or not you would use this strategy in future writing scenario: I discussed ways to provide more information to the reader. I struggle with acknowledging that the reader may not have any idea regarding the topic I am presenting, and I need to write the paper in this manner. With the help of the tutor, I have learned a better way to present my paper to readers and will remember these tips in the future.
I am really glad I sent my paper to the tutor, and wish I knew of it before this! I will be using this in the future.

  23. Kaitlin Edwards

    ● date & time of the appointment; 3/26 3 pm
    ● name of the tutor; Thomas
    ● general summary of what you discussed; Overall he thought my paper was very good. The format was correct and I was very clear with my information. We discussed mainly grammatical and sentence structure errors. I had some sentences that I did not realize were grammatically incorrect, and some that had repetitive words.
    ● brief description of specific elements of your project you will change based on your tutoring session; I made the changes he suggested, and it flows a lot better now.
    ● brief description of the writing and revising strategies you and your tutor discussed; include ideas about whether or not you would use this strategy in future writing scenarios. We pretty much just discussed how I need to not repeat words so much. If I said it in one sentence, I don’t necessarily have to have it in the next. It will flow better that way. I will definitely keep these things in mind when I write my next paper.

After I have to rewrite my literature review , I went to writing center to discuss the ways that I can cite my work. They helped me with rephrasing my sentences instead of just copying from the sources directly. I learned how to cite my sources efficiently and understand the requirements for the assignment better.

  25. Rebecca Behling

    Date: 3/26/15
    Name: Sarah
We discussed ways to better organize the paper to make it flow. We did this by switching around some of the paragraphs. We also revised some of the sentences at the end of each paragraph so each one flows into the next. She also worked with me on making a conclusion that really brought everything together. She taught me to write out an outline to help get a big picture of how I want to sequence my thoughts. Then put separate thought and ideas under each topic to keep it organized. I will definitely use the strategies we went over in the future, they were very helpful.

  26. Alicia Davidson

    ● date & time of the appointment;
    March 26, 2015
    Tutor: Natalie Bereger at VBHEC
Natalie and I looked over my rough draft together. She read it out loud and asked me questions about my topic. She also made suggestions to add to my paper since I was not finished. She also helped with some of my grammar and punctuation errors. Afterwards, I made all of the changes she suggested and I began looking for more information to supplement what I already had.
In the future, I plan to have Natalie review my papers because I appreciated her constructive criticism and tips.

  27. Tiffany Waite

    Date: 3/26/2015
    Time: 9am-10
    Name of tutor: Justin
Summary: We discussed how to improve the content of my introduction, as well as editing my transitions between phrases.
Specific elements that I will be changing are my introduction because it was very repetitive and lacks some of the information discussed in the body. I will also add more specific information into the body of my paper to act as supporting details.
The tutor provided me a list of transitional phrases and described ways I can add details that will make my paper more convincing. I will be sure to use more transitional phrases in the future to make phrases flow better.

    March 25, 2015
4:00-5:00 appointment at the writing center, main campus in the library
    Name of Tutor- Katie McCamy
We discussed the correct format for APA and actually reviewed it online through Perdue Owl. Also, we discussed proper ways of introducing my topic and expanding on what exactly some things were. This was actually very helpful because she knew nothing about dental caries, she thought this was very interesting. She suggested that I explained things more incase someone like her was reading my paper who really was unaware of dental caries.

I will be changing my conclusion around because I repeated myself and it was confusing. I will also be changing my introduction slightly because I also repeated myself towards the end. I will also fix some of my citations and the way I set my paper up.

We discussed trying to exclude first person writing and my opinion. I sometimes get carries away and put my opinion in when it is not needed. We also discussed the need to explain certain things more so I would not confuse the reader.
